As you may recall, the EFC held its inaugural Employers’ Symposium last year in November on the theme “Harnessing Innovation for Organizational Sustainability”.  This was a great success and the feedback we received was very encouraging.  Consequently, it was decided that we would make this an annual event in the EFC Calendar.

We are now pleased to inform you that the EFC will conduct the Employers’ Symposium this year on the theme “Working Out Of The Box – New Work Practices” on 31st October and 1st November at Waters Edge Battaramulla.

One of the fundamental issues employers are faced with in relation to the labour regulatory framework is the inability to have flexible work arrangements that suit the requirements of the world of work today.  This was clearly revealed in the findings of the survey we conducted amongst our members on the “Impact of labour law on employment generation in Sri Lanka” last year.

However, some of these work arrangements such as outsourcing, sub contracting, part-time work are becoming a reality in Sri Lanka.  To what extent have these work arrangements impacted on the traditional employment relationship?  What are the work arrangement practices in other countries?  Shouldn’t we create an enabling environment for flexible work arrangement practices? The Employers’ Symposium 2013 will focus on these issues and many more.

Our Keynote Speaker at the Symposium will be Mr Lowe Joo Yong, Programme Director, National University of Singapore (Strategic Human Resource Management).  We would also have Mr Akkasha Sultan Shaikh – Regional Director ASEAN – Oracle Corporation (a Fortune 500 company and the 2nd largest company in software and programming industry in the world) making a presentation on ‘Working Out Of The Box – The Oracle Experience’.

In addition to the above speakers we will also have the ILO perspective presented by Mr Gotabaya Dasanayaka – Snr. Specialist, Employer Activities, ILO.

One of the significant features of the Symposium would be a panel discussion which will bring together business leaders in Sri Lanka and prospective job seekers who would give their impressions on the ‘perfect employer’ and the ‘perfect employee’ and their preferred work arrangements.  The Symposium will also have a presentation of the findings of a survey conducted by PriceWaterhouseCoopers in the IT/BPO/KPO industries on new work arrangements these industries require today.

The 2nd day of the Symposium will commence with a debate on ‘Should work be done within an employment relationship?’ We would encourage as many members as possible to participate and forward us their arguments for and against this topic as soon as possible.  The Symposium will also give an opportunity for members to showcase some new work arrangement practices that they already practice which would encourage and stimulate others to follow.  A questionnaire for this purpose has been designed and will be circulated amongst you, very soon.

Finally, the Symposium is intended to draw conclusions that would form the basis of representations that the EFC will make to the policymakers in terms of the required changes that would be necessary to be made in policy/laws in order to cater to the new work arrangements that are needed in the world of work today.
