Preparing for Emergencies: Fire Safety Training at the EFC


The Employers’ Federation of Ceylon (EFC) successfully conducted a one-day training programme on “Fire Safety and Emergency Response Plan (with Demonstration)” on 24th October 2025 at the EFC Auditorium, Rajagiriya.

The programme was designed to strengthen organizational preparedness for workplace emergencies and to enhance awareness of fire safety, evacuation procedures, and emergency response planning. Participants representing a range of organizations attended the programme, highlighting the importance placed by orgnaizations on ensuring workplace safety and compliance.

The training covered key aspects of workplace emergencies and evacuation, including an overview of disasters and past experiences, evacuation procedures, assembly areas, and business continuity considerations. Participants were also guided on human behaviour during fire incidents, the impact of panic and smoke, and essential fire precautions in buildings. In addition, the programme addressed fire risk assessment principles, identification of workplace fire hazards, and practical measures to mitigate risks.

Special emphasis was placed on fire prevention and fire protection systems, including the use and operation of fire alarms, fire suppression systems, hydrants, hose reels, and fixed installations. The session also provided practical guidance on escape routes, evacuation methods, and assisting mobility-limited persons during emergencies.

A key highlight of the programme was the practical demonstration, which included hands-on training in the use of different types of fire extinguishers, hydrants, hose reels, and breathing apparatus, enabling participants to gain first-hand experience in responding to fire emergencies.

The programme was conducted by Mr. M. N. P. Harischandra, Former Divisional Fire Officer (Training) of the Colombo Fire Brigade, who brings over 30 years of experience in fire safety and emergency preparedness in Sri Lanka and India.

The training was well received by participants and reaffirmed EFC’s continued commitment to promoting safe workplaces, emergency preparedness, and effective risk management among employers.
