Plantation Services

The Plantation Service Sector of the Employers’ Federation of Ceylon took a momentum during 1992 with the Government’s decision of-privatizing the Estates. The companies engaged in managing plantations, joined the EFC membership for its sector specific services. Since then, we have been providing services to more than 20 significant Regional Plantation Companies (RPC) that directly employs over 135,000 people and nearly millions of persons residing within these Estates. The RPCs represent Tea, Rubber, Coconut, Spices, Palm oil and multiple other crops that are largely contributing to the socio-economic development of Sri Lanka.

A sector with unique practices, norms and procedures require specialised knowledge and skill to deal with specific issues. The Plantation Sector of the EFC is geared to deliver the following services to its plantation company members.

Advisory and consultation on;

Industrial / employee relations.

Recruitment of the estate staff, registered estate labour, casual workers.

Offer of work i.e. annually, monthly, payment of advance, recovery etc.

Wages i.e. daily wages, advances, extra rates, pro-rata wages, overtime, over-kilos, holiday payments, bonus, festival advances, ex-gratia payments etc.

Maintaining records of employees i.e. labour diary, personal files, security logbook, check-rolls, field records, pay books, attendance, salaries, field cost books etc.

Procedures during strikes, go-slow and work-to-rule.

Dispute settlement and consultation on disciplinary actions.

Collective bargaining and negotiations (staff and manual workers).

Drafting of collective agreements.

Lobbying and advocacy.

Conducting sector specific inhouse and company-based programmes.

Plantation Sector Training

The professional staff members having experience in the field will deliver the following programmes to address specific training needs of the plantation sector.

  • Labour Laws applicable for the Plantation Sector.
  • Awareness sessions on the provisions of the Plantation Sector Collective Agreements.
  • Handling Employee Misconduct and the Disciplinary Procedure in the Plantation Sector.
  • Communication skills for better Industrial Relations in the Plantations.
  • Special training programmes organised in collaboration with the ILO on topics such as Decent Work Practices and Climate Resilience etc.
  • Company-based customised training to address specific needs of plantation companies.
